Chapter Eleven

Meeka and Rick went out at least once a week for the next month. The couple was getting closer and Rick had even told Meeka that he loved her the last time they had finished making love. While she didn’t realize it, she mumbled it back to him as she was going to sleep in his arms, her head on his chest.

Meeka’s whole attitude changed and people in her life were starting to notice. Johnny was actually being nicer to her and even her mother had stopped pressing her for questions. For once in her life, Meeka found that everything was falling into place and she couldn’t have been happier.

Rick mirrored her feelings, but he was getting razzed at work more. Everyone wanted to know who the special woman was that had stolen his heart, but he was tight-lipped about his personal life at work. A few of the nurses were a little more flirty acting with him and instead of playing around he was a bit more distance. He didn’t want anything to be misconstrued and the truth was that he didn’t have eyes for anyone else anymore. He woke up thinking of Meeka and she was the last thing he thought of when he went to bed at night.

Rick was nervous though. As they got more and more close, he worried about losing her. There were aspects of Meeka’s life that he was still not privy to and the big one was her son. He knew that she had a six year old son and that she was widowed, but he had never met her son. She didn’t want them to meet until she was absolutely sure about him, so it added more pressure to an already stressful situation.

He was in the middle of a shift when he got a text from Meeka and his whole demeanor brightened.

“Hey baby. Do you want to come over for dinner tonight?”

Of course, Rick thought in his head. He would have never turned down a chance to see her and he was already feeling a faster heart beat with the very idea of seeing her again. They usually met on Thursdays, which was both of their days off and Meeka’s mother would watch her son. Something was different though, he just knew it.

“Is your mom going to watch your son for you tonight?”

“No.”

Rick knew what that meant and while he was relieved that she was finally ready to take the next step, he couldn’t help the nerves in the pit of his stomach. He was worried that her son wouldn’t like him and he knew it would be a deal breaker. Meeka was adamant that she was a packaged deal, so he knew that it mattered a lot. The very idea of losing her caused his throat to constrict and he wasn’t ready for that to happen.

“Okay, so I get to meet your other half?”

“Yes. Are you ready?”

“Yes baby, I can’t wait. What time would you like me to come over there?”

“How does eight sound to you?”

“Perfect, I love you.
